How much should a small business spend on Google Ads?

Work backward from the results you need. Decide how many leads you want a month, estimate how many clicks it takes to get one, and multiply by what clicks cost for your keywords in your area. Then check that the cost per customer fits your margins. That gives you a starting budget you can test, rather than a number picked out of the air.

Key takeaways
  • A good budget starts from your numbers: leads needed, conversion rate, cost per click and customer value.
  • Google Ads uses an average daily budget; spend can vary day to day but is capped monthly.
  • Start with enough budget to learn from, on your highest-intent searches.
  • Scale only what produces customers at a cost you can afford.

Start from the numbers that matter

  • Customer value: the average profit from a new customer, ideally over their lifetime with you.
  • Close rate: how many leads become customers.
  • Affordable cost per lead: the most you can pay for a lead and still make money, given your close rate.
  • Conversion rate: how many clicks become leads on your landing page.
  • Cost per click: what clicks cost for your keywords and area. Google’s Keyword Planner gives estimates.

A simple budget formula

Monthly budget = leads you want × (cost per click ÷ conversion rate)

Say you want 20 leads a month, clicks cost about $8 and your landing page converts 10% of clicks into leads. Each lead costs about $80 ($8 ÷ 0.10), so you need roughly $1,600 a month. If 1 in 4 leads becomes a customer worth $1,500 in profit, each customer costs about $320 in ads, which is affordable. If the numbers don’t work, improve the conversion rate or close rate before raising the budget. These figures are an illustration; use your own.

How Google Ads budgets actually behave

Google’s help page on managing spend explains that you set an average daily budget. On any given day, spend can be up to twice that amount, but your monthly charges won’t exceed the daily budget multiplied by 30.4, the average number of days in a month. So a $50 daily budget means up to about $1,520 a month, with some days higher and some lower.

Where to spend first

  1. Your brand name, so competitors can’t take your own searches.
  2. High-intent service searches such as “emergency plumber near me” or “estate planning attorney [city]”.
  3. Your most profitable services, before broader or research-stage searches.
  4. Remarketing to people who visited but didn’t contact you, once the basics are working.

A budget spread across too many campaigns learns slowly. Concentrate it where buyers are closest to deciding.
