How to get into Google Ai Overviews
There is no submission form, special file or markup for Google Ai Overviews. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal Google Search. From there, Google picks supporting links from pages that answer the question and its related sub-questions clearly, on sites it already trusts.
- Eligibility is ordinary SEO: crawlable, indexed and allowed to show a snippet.
- Ai Overviews run several related searches (query fan-out), so covering sub-questions widens your chances.
- Answer-first passages, clear structure and visible facts get cited; vague copy doesn’t.
- Brand mentions, reviews and backlinks strongly track with Ai Overview visibility.
What Ai Overviews are
Ai Overviews are the generated summaries that appear at the top of many Google results, with links to the pages used to build them. Ai Mode is Google’s fuller conversational search experience built on the same idea. Both draw on Google’s search index, so the pages they cite are pages Google can already find and rank.
What Google says it requires
Google’s own documentation, Ai features and your website, is unusually direct. To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Google says there are no extra technical requirements, no special schema and no new machine-readable or Ai text files needed. Normal SEO best practices apply.
The same page lists the practices Google recommends: allow crawling (including at your CDN or host), make content findable through internal links, provide a good page experience, keep important content in text, support it with good images and video, make structured data match the visible text, and keep your Business Profile and Merchant Center information current.
Query fan-out: why coverage matters
Google explains that Ai Overviews and Ai Mode may run several related searches across subtopics to build one answer. A question like “is a heat pump worth it in Minnesota” can fan out into searches about cold-climate performance, running costs, rebates and installation prices. Each sub-search is another chance to be cited.
That changes how to plan content. Instead of one page targeting one keyword, aim for pages that answer the main question and the obvious next questions, each in its own clearly headed section with a direct answer.
Step by step
- Confirm eligibility. Use Search Console’s URL Inspection to check the page is indexed and that nosnippet, data-nosnippet or a low max-snippet isn’t limiting what Google can show.
